Central America Pushes Debt-for-Nature Swap

GUATEMALA CITY — Central American nations and environmental groups are trying to persuade major lenders at talks in Washington this week to take part in a regional debt-for-nature swap.
Under the plan, countries in the region could pay off part of their debt in local currencies instead of badly needed foreign exchange and use such payments to finance environmental projects favored by the lenders.
