CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Four people were killed Sunday in a clash between supporters of South Africa’s African National Congress and the rival Inkatha Freedom Party over the use of a stadium, police said.
A police spokesman said ANC and Inkatha groups both believed they had booked the Esikhawini township stadium near the eastern port of Richards Bay. The four were killed when fighting with sticks and guns broke out as the two groups contested who should have use of the venue for a meeting.
The killings pushed the death toll in township clashes around Johannesburg and in the Zulu-dominated Natal province to at least 14 since Friday.
