Sharing Problems

In regards to “Firm Finds Haven From U.S. Environmental Rules” (Nov. 19):
Environmental protection is everyone’s problem and an industrial company should not be exempted from U.S. environmental standards just by moving 150 miles away. Granted, Mexico needs the employment such a move provides, but at our current economic position, so do we. A company that moves to escape environmental standards that seem too costly should, at the very least, have a substantial tax levied on the goods being imported back into the United States.
If companies such as “Muebles Fino Buenos” (Fine Good Furniture) move to Mexico so they can get away with polluting more, we should not turn our backs. Third World or not, Mexico is only 15 miles from San Diego, and we share any environmental impacts. It comes as no surprise to me that David Finegood is willing to drive three hours to work rather than live anywhere near his operation.
