Proposed Legislative Districts Stir the Political Waters

Two South Bay-based legislative districts outlined in the Supreme Court’s redistricting plan are stirring intense political interest because they would probably go unclaimed by an incumbent in next year’s elections.
Here are the names of some of the potential candidates and brief descriptions of the districts:
36TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
Description: A Republican-leaning district extending from the Palos Verdes Peninsula and San Pedro through Lomita, Torrance and the beach cities to Westchester and Venice.
Potential candidates: San Pedro business consultant John Barbieri, Orange County utility executive Brian Bennett, Torrance attorney William Beverly, Rancho Palos Verdes aerospace consultant Alan Carlan, Long Beach State business law instructor David Barrett Cohen, Assistant U.S. Atty. William Fahey, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores, Redondo Beach Mayor Brad Parton, GOP activist Maureen Reagan, Rancho Palos Verdes City Councilman Robert E. Ryan.
53RD ASSEMBLY DISTRICT
Description: A Republican-leaning district covering the beach cities, most of Torrance, Lomita, Westchester and Venice.
Potential candidates: South Bay Municipal Judge Josh Fredricks, Manhattan Beach Mayor Bob Holmes, Redondo Beach Mayor Brad Parton, Torrance City Councilman Dan Walker.
