Lakewood St. Joseph’s Jaime Torromeo was the most productive player on the court Saturday night--she set a State championship match record of 47 kills--but Smith was the most dominating when it counted, leading the Chargers to a 15-13, 15-13, 11-15, 12-15, 17-15 victory. It was the first State title for El Toro (22-4), which was the Southern Section Division 5-A runner-up. Smith finished with 21 kills and 28 digs, but more importantly she had two digs to save points that would have given St. Joseph the match. She also had a key ace in the fifth game. “Her best kill came in the fifth game,” El Toro Coach Mike Jagd said. “I swear she was 35 inches in the air and she crushed the ball.”
Other top performers:
Karen Benkovsky, who had 22 kills in Capistrano Valley Christian’s three-game victory over Atherton Sacred Heart Prep in the State Division V title match.
Nicole Elliott, a Dana Hills tennis player who advanced to the Southern Section individual final before losing to San Marino’s Nicole Hummel.
Zrinka Kristich, who had 36 kills in La Habra’s four-game victory over San Jose Leland as the Highlanders won their third consecutive State Division II title.
Lesli Steinert, who had 60 assists in El Toro’s four-game victory over St. Joseph in the State volleyball championship match.
