CAMP DAVID : Visitor From Mexico

President Carlos Salinas de Gortari will meet with President Bush at Camp David on Saturday to discuss the progress of negotiations for a North American free-trade agreement and the future of bilateral efforts to combat drug trafficking.
Mexico, which would like to sign a trade accord next year, is lobbying hard among business, political and media leaders to counter environmental and other concerns about such a deal.
Mexican-American cooperation against drug trafficking was in jeopardy briefly last month after soldiers killed seven federal judicial police at a clandestine airstrip in Veracruz. But Salinas avoided a potentially embarrassing confrontation over the issue when his human rights commission condemned the army for the attack and recommended prosecution of 20 soldiers, including the general in command of the zone.
