Sailor Charged in Drive-by Shootings

A drive-by sniper in a white Thunderbird opened fire on Interstate 5 early Saturday, shooting at a cab full of passengers and later attracting the attention of San Diego police, who exchanged fire with the vehicle in Balboa Park.
Police wounded a man in the chase, but later lost him as the vehicle in which he was riding re-entered the freeway. Officers later arrested a man who had gone to Paradise Valley Hospital in National City to be treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.
Clarence W. Hancock, a 20-year-old Navy sailor assigned to the Cape Cod, was charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and is being held in the San Diego County jail.
Police said they had recovered the vehicle from which Hancock allegedly fired. They are questioning a second suspect who was driving the vehicle.
