SDSU Routs Colorado State

Center Kieishsha Garnes finished a big week with 25 points in San Diego State’s 101-62 rout of visiting Colorado State in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday.

Garnes scored 84 points in the Aztecs’ three victories this week. Forward Michelle Suman led SDSU with 30 points and 13 rebounds, guard Falisha Wright had 22 points and point guard Michelle Miles added four points and 12 assists.

Christina Murguia, a freshman forward from Castle Park High, came off the bench to score five points and grab 11 rebounds in 20 minutes.

The 101 points are a season high for the Aztecs (11-5, 3-0), who led 51-33 at halftime. SDSU shot 21 of 30 (70%) in the first half and 35 of 60 (58%) for the game. CSU (6-10, 1-3) shot only 22 for 67 from the field (33%).

The University of San Diego couldn’t protect a second-half lead and lost to Gonzaga, 66-65, in a West Coast Conference game at the Sports Center.

The Toreras expanded a 28-25 halftime lead to 41-33, but Gonzaga went on a 12-1 run to take a 45-42 lead. The lead changed several more times before Gonzaga went ahead for good, 52-51.

After winning their first WCC game, the Toreras have lost their past three and are 6-10 overall. Gonzaga improved to 2-2, 5-12.

Julie Doria led the Toreras with 18 points. Lynda Jones added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Sarah Christensen led Gonzaga with 16 points, and Juanita Rivera had 15 points and 15 rebounds.
