READ AND ROPE: The Elko, Nev., cowboy poetry convention featuring Newport Beach businessman Frank Carpenter (E1) has seen a change in the kind of verse presented. Convention organizer Hal Cannon says there’s less about life on the range and more on the themes of a dying lifestyle and tough economic times. . . . “Some people are still writing about bucking the horse,” says Cannon, but other verses “hit the issues right now.”
