El Monte : Ties with Taiwanese City
The City Council voted Tuesday to join in a “covenant of understanding” with the Taiwanese city of Yung Kang Hsiang to stimulate cultural and business exchange.
Representatives of the Taiwanese city addressed the council, describing their island city of 140,000 in southern Taiwan. Once primarily an agricultural area, Yung Kang Hsiang is now 25% commercial, 20% industrial, 30% agricultural and 25% residential, they said.
Councilman Dan Morgan said he was pleased that El Monte was extending its reach across the ocean and said he thought the city’s Asian community will also be pleased.
El Monte has slightly more than 108,000 residents living in a smaller area than Yung Kang Hsiang.
