Cal State Northridge forward Shelton Boykin has developed a knack for finding the open man. When the ball is thrown to Boykin at the high post or low post he has been firing cross-court passes to wide-open teammates for three-point baskets. In Monday’s 61-57 loss to Washington, Boykin had a career-high six assists. . . .
In six of its past seven games, Northridge has averaged 20.1 turnovers, reversing a six-game span in midseason in which the Matadors took care of the ball. Beginning with their win over Eastern Washington, they averaged 13.8 turnovers and went 4-2. . . .
Northridge point guard Andre Chevalier grabbed a career-high six rebounds in Northridge’s 83-77 win over Cal State Sacramento on Saturday, even though the Hornets dominated the boards, 44-30. Chevalier is listed at 6-foot but is closer to 5-10. . . .
The Matadors’ 70% shooting in the second half against Sacramento was their best second-half percentage of the season. . . .
Glendale swingman Harry Marks leads the Western State Conference with an 87.5% free-throw percentage and is fifth in three-point shooting at 38.4%.
Women’s basketball: The three women’s four-year college basketball teams in the region--Cal State Northridge, The Master’s and Cal Lutheran--have six wins among them in 63 games. The Master’s is 4-20, Cal Lutheran is 1-16 and Northridge is 1-21. Their combined winning percentage is .095.
Miscellaneous: The last time Cal State Northridge lost its first two baseball games was in 1988 when the then-Division II Matadors were swept, 14-4 and 10-0, by Arizona State. Northridge lost consecutive games four times last season but never three in a row.
Softball: Missy Cress, a junior transfer from Moorpark, leads Northridge with a .417 batting average (five of 12) and four runs batted in.
