PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL : DiCamilli Scores 28 Points as Costa Mesa Routs Estancia

COSTA MESA — The Costa Mesa High School girls’ basketball team had nothing to lose against Estancia in a Pacific Coast League game Thursday night. The Mustangs (19-6, 10-0) had clinched the league championship Tuesday by defeating Laguna Hills.

Thursday, it was Estancia’s turn to take a beating and Costa Mesa tuned up for the playoffs by embarrassing the Eagles, 60-42, in the Mustangs’ gym. The last time the teams met, Jan. 23, Costa Mesa won, 58-49.

“We stayed a lot more focused this time,” said Costa Mesa Coach Jim Weeks, who had five players in foul trouble, including two who fouled out. “Olivia (DiCamilli) did a good job playing defense, and then our bench came in and kept the offense and defense going. When you lose four to five girls , you usually have a letdown, but we didn’t.”

DiCamilli, who scored 24 points against Estancia in the teams’ last meeting, scored 28 points before Weeks took her out with 2 minutes 24 seconds remaining.

“It felt good to score the points,” said DiCamilli, a 5-foot-10 junior. “I just wanted to make sure our team won, and if 28 points goes along with it then I’m happy.”

Estancia (15-9, 7-3), which finished second, was led by senior guard Monique Sweet, who had 18 points.

“She hustled the whole game,” Estancia Coach Russ Davis said. “She’s been consistent and she had a tough assignment, going out and guarding Olivia.”
