BATON ROUGE, La. — Prairie View set an NCAA Division I record for most defeats in a season by losing to Mississippi Valley State, 112-79, Thursday in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference basketball tournament.
Prairie View (0-28), which played this season with only two scholarship players, broke the record for losses shared by four teams--George Washington (1-27) in 1989, U.S. International (1-27) in 1985, Pacific (3-27) in 1984 and Washington State (6-27) in 1953.
The school’s debt-ridden sports program has been losing steadily since scholarship funds dried up two years ago.
Prairie View’s women’s basketball squad is 0-25 and the Panther football team went 0-11 last season.
