La Canada Flintridge : City Joins Waste Plan

The City Council voted unanimously Monday to join other cities in a state-mandated program to better the collection, recycling, treatment and disposal of household hazardous waste.
Passage of the measure ensures an increase in drop-off days in the city for unwanted chemical products such as pesticides, paint, turpentine, motor oil and lighter fluid. Specific dates and locations have yet to be determined, said Mindy Jacobs, public works assistant.
The program is co-sponsored by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and the Department of Public Works and will not require an increase in the city’s recycling surcharge of 56 cents per ton of hazardous waste deposited in area landfills. Though waste haulers’ costs are passed along to residents, it was not immediately known whether billing increases would occur, Jacobs said.
Officials from the city’s two trash companies were unavailable for comment.
