The Comic (Cinemax Monday at 6 a.m.) A kind of slapstick “Sunset Boulevard,” this unjustly neglected 1969 Carl Reiner film is actually one of the most devastating ever made about Hollywood, a tragicomedy, told with stinging satire, about the rise and fall of a silent comedian (Dick Van Dyke).
The Seventh Veil (KCET Monday at 1 p.m.) This landmark British 1945 psychological drama finds concert pianist Ann Todd brought to the edge of sanity by her handsome but cruel guardian, James Mason.
Autumn Sonata (KTTV Wednesday at 1:30 a.m.) The elegiac 1978 Ingmar Bergman film stars Ingrid Bergman as a glamorous concert pianist and Liv Ullmann as her mousy, resentful daughter; in a way, “The Seventh Veil” in reverse.
Effi Briest (Bravo Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at midnight). An exquisite, demanding 1974 R.W. Fassbinder film, set in the 1890s and concerning the fate of a well-born 17-year-old Berliner (Hanna Schyguylla) married off to an older man.
