The San Diego Police Athletic League will hold its annual Hoop Hysteria Sunday and Monday at the San Diego Sports Arena.
The Hoop Hysteria is 24 continuous hours of basketball, starting with a slam dunk contest for high school players at 6 p.m. Sunday. After that, there will be games every hour after that until 7 p.m. Monday when the Chargers will play a PAL law enforcement select team.
In addition, there will be a dance for junior high and high school students at 7 p.m. Sunday.
The cost to enter a team is $200. Admission for the entire 24 hours is $5. All proceeds benefit PAL. For more information, call Michael Brunker at 281-7783.
After coaching 41 years, 28 of them at Southwestern Community College, George “Bud” Milke will retire Friday.
Milke left Mar Vista High to take over as coach at Southwestern in 1964. In nine years as head coach, Milke’s teams were 117-139, with a 51-67 conference record.
Milke and his wife will divide their retirement time between here and Wisconsin. Milke’s son, George, is the basketball coach at Marian Catholic High, and three more children teach physical education or coach, two in the San Diego area.
Barry Waits (basketball) and John Drake (baseball) of University City were named the recipients of the $1,000 scholar-athlete scholarships in memory of UC basketball player Ian Krebs, who died last year.
Waits, who led the City Western League in scoring this season, plans to attend Northern Arizona. Drake is headed to Western Virginia State.

At Monte Vista, Bonacorsi was on the volleyball, basketball, swimming, softball and soccer teams, but was a first-team All-San Diego Section Division II selection in volleyball.
