A 27-year-old Vista man driving along California 78 was killed early Friday when he was struck by a flying tire, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The victim, identified by the San Diego County medical examiner’s office as Abib Shhadeh, was driving east near College Avenue when he was struck by the tire that flew off a car being driven the opposite direction, a CHP spokesman said.
The other driver maintained control of his vehicle, pulled it off to the side of the freeway and walked home--apparently unaware of what happened after his tire flew across the median, officials said.
Shhadeh’s vehicle crashed into an embankment after the collision with the tire, authorities said. No other vehicles were involved.
