Laguna Shanti, if Troubled, Still Has Niche
- Share via
The decision by AIDS Walk Orange County not to fund Laguna Shanti was a correct one. Shanti has a history of mismanagement. However, the controversy over the decision does bring to light a valid criticism of AIDS Walk Orange County.
A committee of supposedly “disinterested” parties, appointed by the self-selecting AWOC Board of Directors, meets in secret to decide the fate of the $500,000 AWOC collects from the public.
Then AWOC attempts to subvert any public scrutiny of its decision by not forthrightly releasing the percentage of money awarded to each recipient organization.
AIDS Walk, it’s time to bring the funding process out of the closet. You are not above public scrutiny just because you are an AIDS organization.
