A San Fernando Superior Court jury has recommended that a Reseda man be sentenced to death for the murder and rape of a San Fernando Valley woman, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
The jury took four hours Monday to decide that Richard Stitely, 48, should die in the gas chamber for the murder, rape and sodomy of Carol Unger, 47, of Reseda, Deputy Dist. Atty. Andrew Flier said. Stitely was convicted by the same jury Aug. 7 of the fatal attack on Unger and also of raping a 16-year-old girl, who was five months pregnant at the time of the June 28, 1989, assault.
Unger’s partially clothed body was discovered Jan. 20, 1990, in an alley in Sun Valley. Flier said Stitely raped and murdered Unger after he offered her a ride home from a bar the day before her body was discovered.
