Hewlett-Packard Cuts Prices: Joining in the industry price war, Hewlett-Packard Co. announced that it is slashing PC prices as much as 26%. “The cuts are 100% to target second- and third-tier vendors,” said Larry Sennett, a spokesman for the nation’s third-largest computer maker. “We’re going for the clones, not for the Compaqs and Dells.” The price cuts apply to Hewlett-Packard’s entire range of 386- and 486-based desktop personal computers. With the cuts, an advanced HP Vectra 486U personal computer will sell for less than $1,000 for the first time. Separately, the company announced the availability of its new HP Vectra 486/66U computer, which it bills as the fastest, most powerful personal computer in the industry.
