CLOSER TO HOME? Joan Irvine Smith has leased 5,000 square feet at 18881 Von Karman Ave., near John Wayne Airport, for her new Irvine Museum, expected to open next month. Smith has spent millions the past year buying Impressionist Period California landscape pieces. . . . She has a five-year lease, but plans a permanent home for the museum later, perhaps at UC Irvine or the site of the ranch house owned by her grandfather, James Irvine II, founder of the Irvine Co.
