Help-Wanted Figures Released: Help-wanted advertising in U.S. newspapers rose only slightly in August, reflecting persistent economic weakness, additional layoffs and a reluctance of employers to increase payrolls, the Conference Board said. Broken down regionally, the monthly index reported that the largest increase of 5.4% came in the Southeastern states of Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama. The biggest decrease, 10.3%, came in the Southwestern states of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. In the Northeast, where the economic slowdown has been particularly severe, job advertising volume rose 1.8%. The help-wanted index is calculated from employment ads in 51 major newspapers across the country each month.
