A suspected North Hollywood gang member leaning out the window of a moving car died Thursday when his body slammed against a parked automobile, Los Angeles police said.
The 18-year-old man, whose name was not made public pending notification of relatives, was found dead about 6:45 p.m. at the scene of the accident at Runnymede Street near Lankershim Boulevard, said Sgt. Robert Ontiveros.
“The victim was leaning out of the car, possibly throwing gang signs, and he passed too close to a parked car . . . hitting it and causing the rear window to shatter,” Ontiveros said. “The impact caused him to be extracted from the car and killed him.”
The driver fled.
About an hour after the man’s death, a 10-year-old boy who witnessed the incident came forward, telling authorities the man apparently was leaning out of the car, either to commit a drive-by shooting or to flash a gang sign, when he struck the parked car, Ontiveros said.
