A 14-year-old motorcyclist died and another was seriously injured Sunday in a crash during an off-road race at the Barona Indian Reservation, authorities said.
Just after the race began about 1:15 p.m. Sunday, at least two motorcycles crashed, fatally injuring Jeremy Michaud of Valley Center, according to county coroner’s investigator Robert Engel.
Michaud, who was a freshman at Orange Glen High School, suffered internal injuries and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 3:09 p.m., authorities said.
Another 14-year-old rider suffered serious head injuries and was flown by helicopter to Sharp Memorial Hospital. The unidentified boy remained in critical condition Sunday night in the surgical intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Michaud’s parents witnessed the accident at the reservation’s off-road track, which lies near Wildcat Canyon Road about halfway between Ramona and Lakeside, Engel said.
The boys were competing in a race for novice riders of lightweight cycles, Engel said.
