A 54-year-old man died Thursday afternoon of injuries received when he was hit by a car while apparently trying to cross Del Obispo Street near Quail Run.
The driver, a 16-year-old girl, was traveling south in a 45-m.p.h. zone on Del Obispo Street when the accident occurred about 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Unaware that it was a person she had struck, the girl drove on to a nearby gas station where she called for help.
“Apparently, (the victim) had come down a slope and was crossing the roadway,” Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Remender said. “The girl never saw him.”
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo where he underwent surgery. He died at 1:33 p.m. Thursday, authorities said.
The girl, who was alone at the time of the accident, was not cited. She was not injured.
