Ed O’Bannon scored 20 points in 28 minutes and Richard Petruska scored 17 in 23 Thursday night as UCLA held off Athletes In Action, 82-81, in an exhibition before a crowd of 3,762 at Pauley Pavilion.
Athletes In Action missed three shots in the last 10 seconds.
UCLA, which finished third last week in the preseason National Invitation Tournament, seemed uninterested for much of the night, making 22 turnovers against a team that is 1-14 against Division I opponents.
“When you play games like we got done playing and then you come back and play this, you’re going to be less emotional,” said UCLA Coach Jim Harrick, whose team will resume its regular season Saturday against Santa Clara.
Lewis Lloyd, Michael Porter and Eric Dunn all scored 18 points for AIA, which never led in the last 9 1/2 minutes.
Bruin Notes
UCLA’s Mitchell Butler, injured during last Friday’s game against Florida State, re-sprained his left wrist during the second half and will have X-rays taken today. After scoring only two points and making six turnovers in 34 minutes, Butler left the arena with his left wrist in a splint. . . . After sitting out UCLA’s last three games in the preseason NIT because of tendinitis in his right knee, freshman Kevin Dempsey played 16 minutes, scoring five points. . . . UCLA assistant Lorenzo Romar played seven seasons for AIA before being hired by the Bruins last spring. He scored 45 points against Michigan last season and an AIA-record 54 against Trinity Western College. . . . UCLA’s games against Santa Clara on Saturday and against San Diego on Dec. 12 will start at 4:30 p.m. to accommodate Prime Ticket.
