California IN BRIEF : CALIFORNIA : High Rate of TB Found in State Prison

Infection with tuberculosis is 10 times higher among a group of California prison inmates than for the population of the state as a whole, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported. In a study of an unidentified prison, the CDC said it found 30% of the inmates at the institution tested positive for infection with the tuberculosis bacteria. Of those, 18 had active cases of tuberculosis. the CDC noted that many of the inmates had entered the prison with tuberculosis, but it found that at least 106 inmates who had tested negative when they entered the prison later tested positive.
