Weeks of rain have turned most local soccer fields into surfaces better suited for tractor pulls, but Willemse wasn’t bogged down. She scored three goals in the Griffins’ 4-0 victory over Esperanza Tuesday and another in a 2-1 victory Thursday over El Dorado--victories that moved Los Alamitos (10-2-1, 3-0 in league) alone into first place. Los Alamitos Coach Mark Morin said Willemse is the fittest player on the team thanks in part to her long-distance bicycle riding. But because of the slick field conditions, Willemse has had to depend on more than her stamina. Morin said Willemse was especially sound against Esperanza. “She is so graceful,” Morin said. “She was able to cut while the other team’s players all lost their footing.” With four goals during the week, Willemse took over the team lead from Brandie Hayungs, who has six.
Other top performers:
Jessica Eggleston, who had 25 points and 23 rebounds in Cypress’ 49-39 victory over Katella and scored 32 in a 61-43 victory over Loara.
Mollie Flint, a Corona del Mar guard who scored 36 points in a 60-47 victory over Tustin, 31 points in a 65-53 loss to Newport Harbor and 17 in a 53-29 victory over Saddleback.
Leticia Oseguera, who had 12 points and 14 rebounds as Mater Dei defeated Dana Hills, 51-44, and 19 points and 17 rebounds as the Monarchs beat Mission Viejo, 46-32.
Cynthia Trotter, who made a layup with four seconds left to give Santa Ana a 44-43 victory over Ocean View. Trotter had 21 points and nine rebounds.
