By contributing more than $15,000 to his own campaign, Oxnard City Council candidate Roy Lockwood so far holds the fund-raising lead in a field of 14 candidates competing for a vacant council seat in a March 2 special election.
But according to campaign disclosure statements released this week, Lockwood lists expenditures of about $3,400, including $647 for newspaper advertising and a $2,000 payment to Camarillo-based political consultant Goldhammer, Henderson & Associates.
Lockwood, a retired federal fire chief, reported a cash reserve of $12,000.
The open council seat was vacated by Manuel Lopez, who was elected mayor Nov. 3.
Oxnard optometrist Thomas Edward Holden reported contributions of $7,800, including a $2,000 loan to himself, and expenditures of about $6,300.
He has spent most of his money on postage, printing and advertising.
Naval employee Tony V. Grey so far has raised $4,903 and spent $4,341. Abex Aerospace executive Ralph C. Schumacher reported raising $4,700 and spending $1,800 on advertising and printing.
The remaining council candidates reported raising less than $1,000 each.
They are Deborah DeMoss, a homemaker; Alice Rivera Howe; Tsujio Kato, former mayor and Oxnard dentist; John Patton Sr.; John D. Quigley, a sewage treatment plant worker; Patrick J. Sammon, president of the Sea View Neighborhood Council; Juan Soria, a businessman; Lawrence Stein, an accountant, and Lee Casey-Telles, a business owner.
Candidate Michael Racine, who was disqualified last month for failing to gather enough valid signatures to get on the ballot, qualified this week as a write-in candidate.
