WORLD IN BRIEF : PHILIPPINES : 200 World War II Vets Now Americans

More than 200 Filipino World War II veterans swore allegiance to the U.S. flag, 50 years after President Franklin D. Roosevelt promised to make them citizens for fighting Japanese invaders. “My fellow Americans. I know you’ve waited 50 years to hear an official of my government say that,” U.S. Ambassador Richard Solomon told the veterans. They were the first of more than 3,000 Filipino veterans due to become U.S. citizens after Washington amended U.S. law to fulfill Roosevelt’s vow.
