Funding for Women’s Sports
On the day that you editorialized that the “Cal State system must end the funding inequity suffered by women athletes,” your Sports section published (“The Day in Sports”) the standings in 38 collegiate men’s basketball conferences (as it does every week), and the scores of 121 collegiate men’s basketball games (a slow day).
And on that same day, it published the standings in three women’s collegiate conferences of local interest and the scores of two women’s collegiate basketball games (a very slow day, but a typical ratio!).
Not only do women collegiate athletes have higher grade-point averages and a higher graduation rate than their male counterparts, the lack of a professional level future and megabuck contracts means that most play out of sheer love of the game.
Not only will your reporters find first-rate role models for young women and girls, they will also find quality sports entertainment. You want to help? Just report it!
