Remy McCarthy, the men’s basketball coach at Oxnard College for the past five seasons, has resigned from his position.
McCarthy announced in a faxed statement Monday that he had “requested and received a change of assignment effective July 1, 1993 to a strictly classroom assignment.” McCarthy made the request for “personal reasons.”
Freshman guard Lance Fay, Oxnard’s leading scorer, said McCarthy told the team of his decision Monday.
“It caught me off guard,” Fay said. “It pretty much came as a surprise to all of us.”
McCarthy could not be reached for comment.
McCarthy’s resignation came two days after the end of a disappointing season for Oxnard (16-14). The Condors were expected to challenge Ventura for the Western State Conference North Division title but finished fourth in the five-team division with a 2-6 record.
Oxnard was beset by problems after a 70-68 overtime loss to top-ranked Ventura on Jan. 30.
Freshman point guard Chris Cole suffered a separated right shoulder in a 54-53 loss to Santa Barbara City on Feb. 3, and did not play for the remainder of the season.
Three days later, sophomore center Art Wallace (12 points per game average, 8.4 rebounds) quit the team and freshman forward Steve Amar (14.9 ppg, 6.7 rpg) was kicked off the team for disciplinary reasons.
