Prep Basketball Playoffs / THIRD ROUND : Mendoza Hits Free Throws for Brethren : DIVISION V-AA

VAN NUYS — Richard Mendoza made eight consecutive free throws in the last three minutes to help Brethren Christian to a 77-65 victory over Van Nuys Montclair Prep Friday in a Division V-AA quarterfinal game at Montclair Prep.
Mendoza’s fourth-quarter free throws came on one-and-ones, and he added eight assists. The Warriors (21-7), who made 16 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter and 18 of 25 in the game, will play Brentwood, a 52-49 winner over Pasadena, in a semifinal Tuesday.
Four Brethren Christian starters scored in double figures, led by Reggie Davis with 22 points. Scott Thomas had 18 points and Seth Carey added 15 for the Warriors. Thomas and Carey had five assists and Davis blocked five shots.
Freshman guard Jerome Joseph scored a game-high 28 points, including six three-pointers, for Montclair Prep (17-9).
