Guns in Waco

Your editorial “That Arms Race in Waco” (March 13) shows the hypocritical disregard for the Constitution that liberals have when they go on the warpath.

The editorial states that several confiscated firearms were returned to the Davidian group in Waco when they were acquitted of attempted murder charges in 1988. The Times suggests that the guns should have been destroyed instead. But this kind of thinking implies that a person is guilty whatever the outcome of the trial. When they were acquitted they still had the constitutional right to keep arms as long as they continued to obey the law.

The editorial also asserts that in allowing the purchase of self-loading target rifles (assault weapons) Texas is arrogant and irresponsible. However, many believe that California is arrogant and irresponsible for passing an “assault weapon” ban when a proper historical interpretation of the 2nd Amendment guarantees U.S. citizens the right to keep such arms.

The Times easily dismisses constitutional principles and demands a gun ban because a few radicals in Waco battled with ATF agents. This is like demanding the deportation of Muslims because some terrorists blew up the World Trade Center.
