JOHANNESBURG : Talks Broaden

South Africa’s multi-party constitutional talks resume Thursday with 26 groups from across the political spectrum attempting to restart the negotiating process that was suspended 11 months ago.
President Frederik W. de Klerk, African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela and Zulu chief Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi are expected to attend. But also on hand will be the right-wing Conservative Party and the left-wing Pan-Africanist Congress--two groups that have previously refused to participate in talks.
The ANC and the government, the two most important players, have cleared away many of the issues separating them in a lengthy series of one-on-one sessions. But their tentative agreements are likely to be challenged by many of the participants.
