BOOKWORMS: A group of Woodland Hills teen-agers went all the way to Arizona and checked into a 15th-floor room in a fine hotel so they could . . . study. Ignoring the blistering Phoenix heat and the siren call of a cool pool outside, the Taft High School team including Joshua Stempel, above, crammed for the 12th annual U.S. Academic Decathlon this weekend, the brainy students’ equivalent of a football championship (B1). Taft won the national crown in 1989.
