Canceled: The San Jose Museum of Art and St. Paul’s Minnesota Museum of American Art have canceled their showings of “As Seen By Both Sides,” a nationally touring collection of artworks on the Vietnam War, because of opposition from their local Vietnamese-American communities. The show, seen at UCLA’s Wight Art Gallery in 1991, brought no public protests here, or in most of its other 10 American stops. But some Vietnamese-Americans in Atlanta blasted it as “propaganda” because organizer C. David Thomas got help from government institutions in locating Vietnamese artists. The exhibition, which originated at Boston’s Emmanuel College, includes works by artists from both the United States and Vietnam, among them many war veterans. It is scheduled to begin a two-year, seven-city tour of Vietnam in January.
