The good deeds of several Central Los Angeles students who served their communities in the aftermath of last year’s riots have gone a long way--to Great Britain.
The students left Saturday for a two-week trip to England, Scotland and Wales, where they will examine urban problems with youths from the United Kingdom, tour schools, businesses, historical sites and meet local government officials.
After the riots, the youths helped clean up a local park, tutored children, sponsored multicultural celebrations and workshops, and helped start dialogues with gang members.
Among the 20 area students going on the trip:
* Corina Gomez and Michael Peters of Central High
* Tyron Robinson and Xristian Williams, Verbum Dei High
* Stephanie Sunwoo and Ursula Hessenflow, Los Angeles County School for the Arts
* Iidae Lewis, Manual Arts High
* Amina Lugman, King Drew Medical Magnet
* Freddy Magallanis, Jordan High
* and Antonio Manuel Zepeda, Jefferson High
The “Spirit of Los Angeles: Youth Leaderships Awards” were sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation, Rebuild LA, the British American Chamber of Commerce, British Airways and Forte Hotels.
