Nation IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : S. Africa Leaders Win Philadelphia Medals

South African President F. W. de Klerk and African National Congress President Nelson Mandela were named winners of the 1993 Philadelphia Liberty medal and will receive the prize there July 4, organizers said. The two leaders were cited for their efforts to reform South Africa’s apartheid system, in the spirit of the medal which honors the ideals behind America’s founding. Martin Meyerson, president emeritus of the University of Pennsylvania and chairman of the prize’s international selection commission, said it is believed this is the first time De Klerk and Mandela will have traveled together to the United States.
