Kennedy High’s Nadeau Signs to Play Baseball at Long Beach

Rick Nadeau, a standout outfielder at Kennedy High, has signed to play baseball at Cal State Long Beach.
Nadeau was an All-City Section 4-A Division selection and a Times’ All-Valley selection after helping the Golden Cougars win the North Valley League championship. Nadeau batted .452 with seven home runs and a team-leading 36 runs batted in. He will join teammate Jeff Tagliaferri at Long Beach.
Former El Camino Real High and UCLA first baseman Ryan McGuire has signed with the Boston Red Sox. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but McGuire, a third-round selection, will join Ft. Lauderdale of the Class-A Florida League for the second half of the season, which starts in two weeks.
McGuire, 21, who batted .376 with 26 home runs and 91 RBIs during his junior season with the Bruins, will head to Ft. Myers, Fla., on Monday.
Youth Soccer
Two Valley 16-and-under teams won championships in the United States Soccer Federation regional tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., and qualified for the national tournament next month. The California Stars defeated Arizona Cisco, 2-1, in two overtimes to win the boys’ title. Valley United Wild Things beat Cal North Lightning, 2-0, for the girls’ championship.
Golf
Darren Angel, a sophomore at Granada Hills High, struggled to a 76 during the second round of the Mission Hills Desert Junior golf championships in Rancho Mirage on Wednesday, but remained in second place in the age 15-18 division.
