Three of the area’s top high school football players are among 61 participants expected to play in the Shrine North-South all-star game at Long Beach Veterans Stadium tonight at 7 p.m.
Eliel Swinton of Montclair Prep, Shawn Stuart of Saugus and Tyrone Pierce of Sylmar are members of the South team.
Swinton, a 5-10, 192-pound tailback, led Montclair Prep to an undefeated record and a Southern Section Division IX title last season. He rushed for a Valley-record 2,384 yards. He also scored 24 touchdowns and was a Times All-Valley selection. He will attend Stanford in the fall.
Swinton will share playing time with Saladin McCullough (USC) of Muir and Lawrence Phillips (Nebraska) of Baldwin Park.
Stuart was The Times’ lineman of the year last fall after sharing the Foothill League most valuable player award. The 6-4, 280-pound center will attend UCLA.
Pierce, a 6-3, 225-pound linebacker, was East Valley League co-MVP and was an All-City 4-A selection. He also earned All-Valley honors and will attend UCLA.
Shrine Notes
Quarterback Stais Boseman of Inglewood Morningside and wide receiver Antonio Carrion of Dorsey, two of the higher-profile players in tonight’s game, have been dismissed from the South team for disciplinary reasons. Boseman and Carrion were told to leave the South team’s camp at Occidental College on Wednesday by Coach Mark Paredes of La Puente Bishop Amat. The players left camp without permission Tuesday night and did not return until Wednesday morning. Boseman said they left to visit their girlfriends.
