WASHINGTON — A telethon broadcast this week on radio and television stations around the nation raised at least $4.3 million for flood relief, the National Assn. of Broadcasters reported Friday.
The benefit for the American Red Cross flood relief efforts aired on 280 television and radio stations Thursday evening. Other stations planned to carry a taped version of the show later to encourage more donations.
By noon Friday, more than 52,000 pledges had been received, including $100,000 from former “Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson, the association announced.
The telethon was organized by Midwestern broadcasters and distributed by satellite from Des Moines.
