AFL-CIO Leaders Reelected: Federation President Lane Kirkland and other leaders of the 86-union group were reelected to two-year terms without opposition. Dissident Harry Kelber, 79, a longtime union activist, had sought one of the 33 vice presidential seats on the AFL-CIO’s policy-making executive council, which would have made it the first contested election in 28 years. But Kirkland, presiding over the biennial convention in San Francisco, refused to accept Kelber’s nomination after it was determined that the union official who nominated him was not a convention delegate. Kirkland, 71, has been president of the AFL-CIO for 14 years.
