The Rams, who face Atlanta in the long-awaited season premiere of Thursday night pro football, lead the NFL in the fewest number of penalties with 14 in five games. . . .
That means they are either extremely well disciplined or too well behaved. Their record indicates the latter. . . .
For the record:

Horse racing--An item in Allan Malamud’s column mistakenly said that Native Boundary had not won since 1991. Native Boundary ran five times in 1992, winning once.
Among the most mild mannered is Jim Everett. Just once, I would like to see him explode, a la Dan Marino or John Elway, at a receiver who dropped a pass or a lineman who missed a block. . . .
Surprising stat: Oregon State Coach Jerry Pettibone has three times as many victories as Washington Redskin Coach Richie Petitbon. . . .
“With the problems of a big city, more and more families are interested in sending their sons to a Pac-10 school in a small town,” said Pettibone, whose Beavers (3-3) will play USC (3-3) Saturday at the Coliseum. . . .
For the first time, the Trojans have lost, won, lost, won, lost and won their first six games. . . .
John Robinson says he isn’t afraid USC will be looking past Oregon State and ahead to Notre Dame. You sure wouldn’t think so, considering the results of the last 10 games in the Trojan-Irish series. . . .
UCLA freshman tailback Derek Ayers, who rushed for 174 yards against Brigham Young, is the son of Eddie Ayers, a running back who played for the Bruins in their 23-10 victory over Ohio State in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day of 1976. . . .
Perry Klein’s transfer from California to C.W. Post is paying dividends for the former Southland prep quarterback, who is now considered a first-round draft possibility by some NFL scouts. . . .
Asked to name his favorite television program, University of Miami defensive end Darren Krein said: “The Dennis Erickson Show.” . . .

Too bad Manute Bol didn’t re-sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. Then Shawn Bradley, 7-6, would have been the second-tallest player on the team. . . .
The NHL’s top draft pick, Alexandre Daigle, has lived up to his notices by accumulating five points in the Ottawa Senators’ first two games. . . .
Jim Valvano’s best backcourt at North Carolina State, Rodney Monroe and Chris Corchiani, has been reunited in the Boston Celtic camp. . . .
I prefer the Greg Gumbel-Jim Kaat team that announced the American League playoffs on CBS-TV to Sean McDonough-Tim McCarver, who will get the World Series assignment. . . .
Chicago White Sox Manager Gene Lamont will never be confused with his old friend Jim Leyland as a strategist. . . .
Dave Stewart has become a legitimate Hall of Fame candidate. Four 20-game seasons and an 8-0 record in American League playoff games are solid credentials. . . .
The Blue Jays still have some good prospects left in their farm system, including shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who could replace Tony Fernandez next season. . . .
The Cleveland Indians have not run out of prospects, either. Among them is outfielder Manny Ramirez, who was selected minor league player of the year by Baseball America. . . .
Sparky Anderson is bullish on Eric Davis, meaning the Detroit Tigers probably will keep him. . . .
Doug Million, a left-handed pitcher from Sarasota, Fla., is expected to be a high draft choice in June and sign a contract worthy of his name. . . .
The New York Yankees stole 39 bases this season, a figure matched or surpassed by 12 major league players. . . .

My beef with the players voting Frank Thomas as major league player of the year over Barry Bonds in the Sporting News poll is that Bonds is far superior on defense. . . .
Best Pal, racing’s richest active thoroughbred, may never get an easier chance again than in the $250,000 Cal Cup Classic Saturday at Santa Anita. Native Boundary, second high weight, hasn’t won a race since 1991. . . .
Far more competitive should be the $100,000 Sprint, which has attracted defending champion Answer Do, 1991 winner Letthebighossroll, Gundaghia and Knight Prospector. . . .
Norfolk Stakes winner Shepherd’s Field was named after the football field at Loyola High. Matt Gebhard--the son of owners Roger Gebhard and Ann Martin, a Channel 7 news anchor--plays for Loyola. . . .
The Avrum R. Dansky Treadmill Suite at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan has been named in memory of The Times’ sports results page editor.
