HUNTINGTON BEACH — It took just 12 seconds for Fountain Valley to set the tone for the 47-27 victory over Ocean View in a Sunset League game Friday at Huntington Beach High School.
On the opening kickoff the Barons’ Joey Rozek fielded a squib kick at his 22-yard line and returned it 78 yards for touchdown. Rozek took the ball in the middle of the field then cut to the left and won the race to the end zone.
Fountain Valley (7-2, 4-2 in league) added another touchdown less than four minutes later on a 13-yard run by Adam O’Rourke. The victory broke a two-game losing streak for the Barons, the ninth-ranked team in Orange County.
Rozek scored his second touchdown on a seven-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Scott Bertoni with 15 seconds left in the first quarter.
Despite the quick start, Fountain Valley led only 28-13 at the end of the first quarter. Ocean View’s touchdowns came on a 95-yard kickoff return by David Shaw and a 71-yard blast up the middle by Ted Norman.
Fountain Valley upped its advantage to 34-13 at the half when Jeremy Nicholson scored on a one-yard run late in the second quarter. Nicholson added an eight-yard touchdown run midway in the third quarter to give Fountain Valley a 47-13 lead.
