WORLD IN BRIEF : MALAWI : 16 Die as Troops Fight Pioneer Unit

Troops backed by helicopters stormed the headquarters of paramilitary forces loyal to ailing President Kamuzu Banda, leaving at least 16 people dead, witnesses said. The fighting in the capital, Lilonwe, began after Malawi’s three-man Presidential Council, set up to run the country while Banda recovers from brain surgery, ordered the paramilitary Young Pioneers disarmed after they killed two soldiers in a northern city.
