El Monte : Hearing on Landfill Plan
A state legislative committee is planning to hold a hearing on a proposed landfill for inert construction material planned for Arcadia near El Monte’s Norwood Village.
Assemblywoman Hilda L. Solis (D-El Monte), chairwoman of the Select Committee on Groundwater and Landfill Leakage, said the hearing will take place Friday at the El Monte Community Center.
The committee will also hear testimony on a Metropolitan Water District proposal to clean up ground water in the San Gabriel Basin.
Officials from various organizations are scheduled to testify and the public is invited to comment.
Orion Rodeffer, a developer, wants to turn a 185-acre gravel pit at 12321 Lower Azusa Road into a landfill for dirt, gravel and concrete.
El Monte city officials and residents oppose the landfill. Residents of El Monte’s Norwood Village fear their property values will drop, ground water could be contaminated and trucks would cause dust and noise.
The hearing runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at El Monte Community Center, 3130 Tyler Ave.
