As Shakespeare pointed out, all is not what it seems, especially in show biz. A few standard lines and their true meanings:
Said: It’s a done deal. Meant: Never in a million years. * Said: We may have a screening tonight. Meant: How did you find out there was a screening? * Said: I’ll get right back to you. Meant: Don’t put off your trip to the Himalayas on my account. * Said: One more rewrite and this project is ready to go. Meant: As long as I can keep this in development, my job is safe. * Said: We’ve made a commitment to you and we stand behind it 100%. Meant: Our lawyers are making sure we can fire you immediately. * Said: We’re not just talking here. Meant: We’re just talking here. * Said: That is the most disgusting, revolting movie I’ve ever seen. Meant: Why didn’t we make it? * Said: This will change your life. Meant: Don’t quit your day job. * Said: My agent says I have a very unique style. Meant: I’m uncastable. * Said: Light opera . . . You name it, I sang it. Meant: I did the voice for the kid’s goldfish.
