American Plans Smoke-Free Transatlantic Flights: The largest U.S. carrier said it will launch its smoke-free service from New York to London on May 1. Dallas-based American Airlines said a recent customer survey shows that “a significant number of participants preferred nonsmoking flights.” The airline will designate one of its five daily 6 1/2-hour flights on that route nonsmoking and see whether customers react favorably. The carrier has no plans yet to offer nonsmoking service on other international routes. American follows the lead of United Airlines, which announced in January that it would offer nonsmoking service from New York to London and Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand, starting March 1.
