LOS ANGELES : Council Balks at Cost of Seismic Work on City Hall

Los Angeles City Council members are balking at a recommendation to spend $153 million to make earthquake safety improvements at City Hall.
“Certainly I want to preserve this building, which has some historic value,” Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg said at a meeting of the council’s Administrative Services Committee. “But you have to ask, ‘Is all this necessary, compared to other seismic needs we have in the city?’ ”
But City Architect William A. Holland said enough money will be left from a $376-million bond measure to strengthen the dozens of buildings and bridges that are in need of the work. The cost of strengthening the 66-year-old building jumped from the initial $92.3-million estimate after a more careful review by engineers, Holland said.
